olunteers Week this week which is a fantastic opportunity for us to thank all of our awesome volunteers.
Volunteers play a really important part in Right Here: we are a truly youth-led project, meaning our volunteers make a lot of important decisions and decide how the project will run. We aim to develop teams of volunteers which are diverse and reflect the communities which we are trying to help. All our volunteers are aged 16-25.
Thank you so much from all of the Right Here team.

Self-injury Awareness Day is held each year on March 1st and to help raise awareness The Chrissy B Show on Sky 203 dedicated their programme on the 27th February to the subject. Chrissy B invited Jessica Cotton, Right Here Project Manager onto the show to discuss what Right Here is doing to support young people in Brighton and Hove and what effect this is having in the community.
The Chrissy B Show is a positive TV show that tackles different topics, especially mental health issues and informs and equips viewers to be more positive. It features many of the issues currently in the public eye and uses powerful real life stories in the search for constructive solutions and positive outcomes. The show is also daring, covering difficult topics that aren’t always featured in the media, such as self-harm.

Self-injury Awareness Day is held each year on March 1st. The Right Here team has worked tirelessly to raise awareness and understanding of why people self-harm, how to effectively communicate about it and where to go for support. The Self-injury Day is a great opportunity to highlight the work carried out by the Right Here volunteers.
Right Here volunteers have designed and produced a mini support guide called ‘Talking about Self-harm’ which was launched on Self-injury Day last year. The guide has proven to be a great resource for young people and is available from GPs, schools and youth groups in Brighton and Hove.
In 2013 our Right Here volunteers held a number of focus groups with young people and medical/educational professions who work with them to examine their perceptions and understanding of young people and self-harm in Brighton and Hove. The findings have been compiled in an in-depth research report which can be found here: http://right-here-brightonandhove.org/wp-content/uploads/Self-Harm-Report-Final.pdf
Our Right Here volunteers also currently deliver a one-hour peer led workshop to 13-25 year olds in Brighton and Hove at schools, colleges, youth clubs and residential houses. More information about our workshops can be found here: http://right-here-brightonandhove.org/workshops/
Right Here Brighton and Hove is a project led by young people aged 16-25. We promote the mental and emotional wellbeing of young people in Brighton and Hove. For more information on the Right Here project visit the website: http://right-here-brightonandhove.org/
]]>To that end, Right Here has produced free new resources to help professionals working with young people deliver services that are more ‘youth friendly’ when it comes to mental health and emotional wellbeing . The ‘How to…’ guides are designed to bring together learning from the five year Right Here programme initiated by Paul Hamlyn Foundation (PHF) and the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) to support the mental wellbeing of young people aged 16–25.
Each guide focuses on a particular theme arising from the programme’s work across the UK and aims to provide practical pointers and suggestions to support the development of innovative and effective responses to the mental wellbeing of young people.
Poor mental health is closely related to many other health and social concerns for young people, including educational achievements, employment, relationships and substance use. The ‘How to…’ guides address the professionals working in these areas, supporting:
This Sunday 2nd November, tune in to BBC1 at 11am to catch a story featuring YMCA DLG Right Here Brighton and Hove project.
Right Here Mental Health Promotion Coordinator Rose Allett and two volunteers from the team, Nichola and Anthony, were filmed and interviewed by the BBC for the Sunday Politics Show (South East). The show will highlight ways the local NHS, Council and voluntary sector are tacking mental health issues in Brighton and Hove, especially in relation to young people and self-harm.
Head of Public Health Tom Scanlon will be interviewed live in the studio, and local GP and mental health lead Dr Becky Jarvis was interviewed about our city’s new mental health and happiness strategy.

Representing the voluntary sector, Rose and the Right Here volunteers were filmed delivering one of their ‘Five ways to wellbeing’ workshops to beauty students at City College, then interviewed about Right Here’s 2013 award-winning research into the perceptions of self-harm, their hugely popular mini support guide called Talking About Self Harm, and about the much-needed Self Harm Awareness workshops that Right Here is offering to 13-25 year olds around the city.
So set yourself a reminder for Sunday morning, or watch this space for the iPlayer link next week!

It is broken down into different areas for young people to focus on, things like eating properly, talking about your problems and being kind to yourself, as well as support services in the city.
Project volunteers aim to have these useful leaflets easily available to young people throughout Brighton and Hove in clinical and non – clinical settings. We are particularly keen to engage with GP surgeries in making them freely available in the waiting and consultation rooms, as well as a tool in offering non clinical advice to support young people’s wellbeing.
